I have Photoshop and have taken classes; except for saving as png with transparency option, or erasing with the eraser tool (really?), I haven't run across a good method for making a photo/graphic background transparent when it doesn't start out that way.
Just make a new file, put the image on top, select the background with your magic picker, then click delete.
